4 Common Air Conditioner Issues and How to Fix Them

Regardless of what air conditioner you buy for yourself, you’ll inevitably encounter a few problems down the road, but that doesn’t have to be as stressful as it seems. There are many common air conditioner issues that you can fix yourself! Here are a few common ones that you may be encountering.

Dirty or Clogged Air Filter

The air filter of your AC unit is in charge of catching all the impurities from the air and keeping these away from the cooled air circulating inside the room. As time goes by, all the dust, dirt, and debris can actually build up and clog up the filter, which can lead to a wide range of issues. Aside from decreased indoor air quality and respiratory issues, it might also put unnecessary strain on your air conditioner by inhibiting the airflow within the system.

Fortunately, most air filters these days are reusable and can be easily washed at home. After removing the cover of your air conditioner and detaching the air filter, all you need to do is submerge the air filter in some soapy water. If needed, use a clean cloth or sponge to gently loosen up any stubborn particles before rinsing it off and letting it air dry.

Frozen Evaporator Coils

With all the condensation that the evaporator coils of your unit are exposed to, there’s a very high chance that it’ll end up freezing, especially if there’s another issue inside the system that’s restricting the airflow. This can actually force your air conditioner to work that much harder to maintain your preferred temperature, increasing the wear and tear it experiences and making it much more likely to break down.

The first thing you should do is to figure out what’s causing the coils to freeze, and this can come down to inhibited airflow, low refrigerant levels, dirty air filters, and duct leaks just to name a few. After turning your unit off, leave it for around 24 hours to let the coils begin to thaw on their own. Then, turn on your AC’s fan as this will help circulate warm air through the coils. Let the coils dry completely before turning your air conditioner back on.

Dirty Condenser Coils

Just like with air filters, dust, dirt, and other impurities can also accumulate on your air conditioner’s condenser coils. This could end up compromising the airflow inside your unit, as well as the unit’s ability to release heat, which is crucial during the cooling process. After locating the condenser coils inside your unit, you can use a soft brush and a coil cleaning solution to gently clean away all of the contaminants and restore proper air circulation.

Draining Issues

Your air conditioner needs to let out all the condensation that it collects during the cooling process to control the humidity within the system, and this is where your drain line comes in. However, the drain line can also get clogged by dust, dirt, and debris. This becomes a problem as poor drainage may result in the formation of mold, mildew, and fungus, which could also produce a nasty smell and pose some serious hygiene problems.

This is why it’s important to check up on the drain line every now and then and make sure that there are no blockages or obstructions that could be affecting your air conditioner’s draining.
